Trail Re-build/Construction News

The Michigan DNR is currently in the planning and construction stages to completely rebuild the entire length of the Musketawa Trail.

We’re excited to share the news that the Musketawa Trail will get new pavement, bridges and upgrades. However, trail building (in this case, rebuilding) is very expensive. You, our faithful users and supporters, can do something to assist with this project. If you are interested, you can learn more about the Musketawa Trail rebuild at the following West Michigan Trails web page: http://wmtrails.org/community-engagement

The Michigan DNR started work on the Ottawa County portion of the Musketawa Trail in early January 2025. This work will extend from the Marne (8th Avenue) trailhead through to Conklin St. in Ravenna. While this work is progressing, both the Marne and Conklin trailheads/parking lots will be closed with work expected to be completed sometime in 2026. Planned work includes tree trimming/removal, culvert replacement, bridge repair/replacement and rebuilding/resurfacing the trail (with asphalt at 10 feet wide). The Ravenna trailhead/parking lot will remain open during this construction with the trail to the east closed and the trail to the west open. Reconstruction of the remainder of the Musketawa Trail (Muskegon County section) will come at a later date as funds become available. Please respect any trail closures and posted signs. (Please note that usage of the trail in closed sections that are signed/marked could lead to a citation from the Michigan DNR.)

* UPDATE (08/08/25):

Work is well underway on the first half of work rebuilding the Musketawa Trail (Ottawa County section from 8th Avenue trail head to Ravenna). Most bridges have been removed in this section and they will be replaced by either new spans on the longer ones (example: Rio Grande) or box culverts for the small ones. The bridge/trestle at Crockery Creek (Ravenna) will be re-worked with a new surface structure, new approaches and refurbished concrete bases down at the creek. Pulverization of the old trail surface asphalt has also begun out near 8th Avenue. The first layer of new pavement has started to go in at 8th Avenue as of late August 2025.

Please take a look at some of the construction photos.
